Islam and Chinese Traditions: Closer Than You Think
Every time Islam is discussed, many assume it is a "Malay religion." Many also believe that someone who converts to Islam must abandon their original culture, including food, clothing, and language. But is this really true?
Islam: A Religion for All Nations
Islam does not belong to any particular race. It is a religion revealed for all of humanity, regardless of origin or skin color. Across the world, there are millions of Muslims from various ethnicities, including Chinese communities in China, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In China itself, Muslim communities such as the Hui ethnic group maintain their culture while firmly holding onto Islam.
Traditional Chinese Values in Islam
Interestingly, Islam does not contradict Chinese traditional values. In fact, many Islamic teachings align with long-held Chinese cultural traditions. Let's explore some surprising similarities:
- Filial Piety (Xiao 孝): Honoring Parents In Chinese culture, respecting and caring for one's parents is a fundamental value. This concept is also emphasized in Islam. In the Quran, Allah states:"And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents." (Surah Al-Ahqaf: 15)Islam teaches that parents must be treated with kindness, respect, and care, regardless of their religion.
- Honesty and Justice (Yi 义): Business Ethics The Chinese are well known for valuing honesty in business. This principle is also in line with Islamic teachings, which emphasize fair and ethical business dealings."And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance." (Surah Al-An'am: 152)Islam forbids cheating in trade, just as Confucianism stresses the importance of integrity and trust in business transactions.
- Cleanliness and Health (Li 礼): A Pure and Healthy Life Chinese culture places great importance on cleanliness in food and lifestyle. Islam also has strict guidelines on hygiene, including halal food regulations and purification rituals before prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:"Cleanliness is half of faith."This highlights the significance of hygiene in a Muslim's life, similar to the Chinese belief in maintaining a clean and healthy lifestyle.
- Harmony and Peace (He 和): Social Relationships The concept of harmony is deeply ingrained in Chinese culture. Islam also places great emphasis on this value. Islam teaches kindness to neighbors, fairness to all people, and living harmoniously in society."And do good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the farther neighbor, the companion at your side..." (Surah An-Nisa: 36)Islam is not just about one's relationship with God but also about fostering good relationships with fellow human beings.
- Wealth and Profit: Islam Balances Wealth with Life The Chinese place great importance on wealth, profit, and business success. In Islam, acquiring wealth is not prohibited; in fact, it is encouraged as long as it is obtained lawfully and used wisely."And seek through that which Allah has given you the home of the Hereafter, and [yet], do not forget your share of the world." (Surah Al-Qasas: 77)Islam teaches balance—striving for wealth with effort while not becoming a slave to it. True success in Islam is not merely measured by the amount of money one possesses, but by how that wealth is used for personal and communal benefit. In Islam, charity (sadaqah) and obligatory almsgiving (zakat) not only help others but also bring greater blessings to one's business and life. Many people fear losing wealth and fear death, but Islam teaches that life is temporary, and the only wealth that will remain is the good we have done with it. Therefore, Islam encourages a balance between earning a livelihood and preparing for the afterlife.
A Prosperous Life Beyond Death
One of the greatest fears among the Chinese is death. Many worry about what happens after they leave this world. But why fear death if a better and more prosperous life awaits those who submit and obey the Almighty Allah?
Living in constant fear of the unknown negatively affects both mental and physical health. Fear exists because one does not know what will happen next. No one has ever told them with certainty what happens after death. However, unlike other beliefs, Islam provides a clear and detailed explanation of life after death, as revealed in the Quran and by the Almighty Allah Himself.
Good news is, Islam teaches that life does not end with death; rather, it is a transition to an eternal existence. Those who live righteously and obey Allah will be granted a life in paradise filled with peace, happiness, and rewards beyond imagination.
"Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment." (Surah Al-Buruj: 11)
Instead of fearing death, Islam encourages preparation for a meaningful and blessed eternal life. True security does not come from material wealth alone but from knowing that one's soul is at peace and destined for a fulfilling hereafter. The uncertainty that causes fear is removed when one embraces the divine knowledge that has been given to humanity, ensuring that we understand our purpose and what lies ahead.
Family Stigma and Innate Belief in God
One of the biggest fears among the Chinese regarding Islam is the belief that converting to Islam means severing family ties. However, in reality, Islam does not cut family bonds. A Muslim is still obligated to be dutiful to their parents, even if they are of a different religion. Islam never prohibits a person from loving and respecting their family.
At the same time, the Chinese community is often more accepting of someone converting to Christianity than to Islam. This is because Christianity is often seen as more closely linked to Western culture, whereas Islam is frequently associated with Malays in Malaysia. In truth, Islam is not Malay culture but a faith for all of humanity.
In China, there is a sacred site called The Temple of Heaven, built by the Ming Dynasty emperors as a place for annual rituals to pray for good harvests. Interestingly, this site does not contain any statues or idols, reflecting the belief in a supreme force that governs the universe. However, the Chinese themselves lack clarity on who this supreme being is. This demonstrates the natural human inclination to believe in a higher power beyond their control.
In Islam, this need is fulfilled by the concept of Tawhid, the belief in One God who is incomparable to His creation. Islam provides clarity about who God is—He is Allah, the Creator of all things, who neither begets nor is begotten.
"Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'" (Surah Al-Ikhlas: 1-4)
Do Not Judge Islam by Its Followers
Many people judge Islam based on the actions of its followers. However, just as there are good and bad individuals in every community, there are also Muslims who do not fully understand or practice Islam correctly. To truly understand Islam, one must refer to its two primary sources—the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Hadith).
If you want to see what Islam really is, do not look at those who claim to follow it yet act against its teachings. Instead, study its divine guidance from the Quran and authentic Hadith, where the true essence of Islam is preserved.
Conclusion
Islam is not a foreign religion to the Chinese. In fact, many values in Chinese culture already align with Islam. Islam does not erase culture but purifies it from elements that contradict monotheism. A person who embraces Islam does not lose their Chinese identity, as Islam is a mercy for all nations. So, is it fair to reject something that is already close to our hearts and values? If Islam brings the truth, is it justifiable to reject it simply because of inherited stigma and misconceptions? If we truly seek the truth, the answer will surely bring us closer to the One True God.
