The Obligation of Understanding and Following the Quran
Why Faith Requires Comprehension and Action
"And this is a blessed Book which We have revealed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy." (Surah Al-An'am: 155)
Let's pause for a moment on two key words in this verse: فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ وَٱتَّقُواْ – "so follow it and fear Allah." How many of us truly understand what these words mean? These aren't mere suggestions. They are direct commands from Allah, the Creator of everything.
فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ – "Follow it." This is not about passive reading or treating the Quran as just a holy relic to recite for rewards. It's a call to action, a demand to align our lives with the Quran's teachings. Yet, how many of us read the Quran without ever thinking, "Am I actually following this?" We might recite beautifully, but when it comes to living our daily lives – in our choices, our priorities, our habits – are we truly following the guidance of the Quran?
وَٱتَّقُواْ – "And fear Allah." This isn't just fear for the sake of fear. It's a conscious awareness of Allah in everything we do. It's the realization that every decision, every word, and every action is being recorded. It's about developing a sense of accountability. But how often do we reflect on this? If we don't fear Allah, what drives us? Fear of people's opinions? Fear of losing status or wealth? Allah is commanding us to develop taqwa, a protective shield of mindfulness that keeps us on the straight path.
The Reality of TodaySadly, many people today don't understand these two simple yet profound commands. We've turned the Quran into something cultural, something ritualistic. We recite it to earn rewards – "One letter equals ten rewards," we say. But what about applying it? What about following it?
If we understood فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ, we'd realize that the Quran is a guide for every aspect of life. It's not just for ustaz, tok guru, or scholars. It's for all of us – for the businessman making deals, for the mother raising children, for the youth navigating peer pressure. But many of us dismiss it, thinking, "I'm not a scholar. The Quran is too complicated for me." This mindset reflects a lack of willpower and understanding. The Quran wasn't sent down for the elite; it was sent for all of humanity.
When Allah says, "Follow it," He's telling us to act on what we read. For example, when we read about honesty in dealings, do we ensure we're honest in our transactions? When we read about avoiding backbiting, do we hold our tongues? Without action, recitation alone won't transform us.
Lack of Willpower: A Spiritual Crisis
Without willpower, we treat the Quran as a side project – something we turn to when we have time, not as the central guide of our lives. If we lack the willpower to act on the Quran, we're essentially saying, "I know better than what Allah says." This arrogance leads to the hardening of hearts, just like the previous nations who neglected their scriptures.
Imagine this: If we need help with a worldly matter, like securing a job or solving a financial problem, we'll go to great lengths to find someone influential to assist us. Yet, when it comes to our relationship with Allah, the One who controls all outcomes, where is our effort? Where is our willpower to follow His words and develop taqwa?
Why Does This Matter?
Because فَٱتَّبِعُوهُ وَٱتَّقُواْ is not optional. It's a life-saving instruction. Allah has made it clear: "Follow it, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy." If we ignore this, we're depriving ourselves of His mercy. What could be more tragic?
In conclusion, the Quran is more than a book of blessings; it's a book of action. It's time we shifted our mindset. Let's approach the Quran with the determination to follow its guidance and develop the mindfulness (taqwa) Allah commands. But here's the crucial question: How can we follow if we don't understand? Following the Quran isn't just about reciting its verses—it requires comprehension. To truly be among the believers Allah speaks of, we must follow the Quran. To follow, we must understand. And to understand, we must make learning and reflecting on the Quran a priority.
Understanding the Quran becomes wajib (obligatory) because it is the path that leads us to Paradise. Without it, we risk walking blindly in this life. Remember the resounding question Allah poses at the end of Surah Al-Mursalat: "Then in what statement after this (Quran) will they believe?" (Al-Mursalat: 50). If not the Quran, then what? If not Allah's guidance, then whose? Let us not become among those who dismiss the ultimate truth. The Quran was revealed to guide us to Allah's pleasure and eternal happiness in the hereafter—don't let it be a guide you never follow.
